Ever since its announcement, Leica’s new V-Lux 4, the successor of the much loved V-Lux 3, has been turning heads. The super-zoom “SLR-type” compact camera boasts a 25-600mm lens with a constant aperture of f/2.8, an incredibly fast and versatile combination. Earlier this month ...

The new Leica D-Lux 6, replacement to the popular D-Lux 5, has started to ship in the United States, and I have been playing with it for a few days (the above image of the water tower was taken with the D-Lux 6, 24mm, 1/250th at f/4, ISO80). As a D-Lux 5 owner myself, I was especially

The X1 had been a pretty revolutionary idea when Leica released it alongside the M9 on 9/9/9 three years ago. Forgoing the smaller micro 4/3 sensor format, Leica went larger, opting for an SLR-sized APS-C 12MP CMOS sensor. The decision resulted in excellent image quality, even at high ISO. In fact, ...

When I heard the rumors about a B&W-only digital M camera body a few months ago, I was a bit skeptical. Who would want such a thing when it is so easy to convert M9 images to B&W in a matter of seconds with LR, Silver Efex or (insert favorite image processing software here)? I chalked it up to just being one of those far-fetched rumors that never materializes into a real product. As May 10 approached, the rumors were still going strong for this B&W M9. Leica’s none-too-subtle hints tended to support it as well – the name of the event, Das Wesentliche (translation: The Essentials), the B&W image promoting the event, the avant-garde location

When the S2 launched, Leica announced that the camera would feature a dual shutter system. The rear of the S2 has a power switch with three positions: Off, FPS and CS. FPS stands for focal plane shutter, which is standard in just about every SLR-type camera out there (except the Hasselblad H system). ...

At Photo Plus Expo in New York City, Leica introduced the new Elmarit-S 30mm f/2.8 ASPH wide angle lens for the S2. I received a lot of questions as to why Leica would come out with a lens so similar in focal length to the existing and already quite amazing Summarit-S 35mm f/2.5 ASPH. For the Leica S2 Pro Format, a 30mm is equivalent to a 24mm FOV (field of view) on the 135 format. This actually compliments the 35mm Summarit-S quite nicely, which has an equivalent FOV of 28mm. For decades, 24mm and 28mm have been important and distinct wide-angle focal lengths in the Leica stable of lenses. And, when the 24mm f/3.5 lens is released next year, the S-System will have an incredible wide-angle line-up of 19, 24 and 28 equivalent focal lengths.

One of the most frequent wish-list requests we get from S2 users is to have a really good long telephoto. The Leica APO-Tele-Elmar 180mm f/3.5 is an amazingly good lens, but sometimes it just isn’t long enough. Since adapters for third party lenses became available about a year ago, we’ve been on the hunt for some options.
