At Photo Plus Expo in New York City, Leica introduced the new Elmarit-S 30mm f/2.8 ASPH wide angle lens for the S2. I received a lot of questions as to why Leica would come out with a lens so similar in focal length to the existing and already quite amazing Summarit-S 35mm f/2.5 ASPH. For the Leica S2 Pro Format, a 30mm is equivalent to a 24mm FOV (field of view) on the 135 format. This actually compliments the 35mm Summarit-S quite nicely, which has an equivalent FOV of 28mm. For decades, 24mm and 28mm have been important and distinct wide-angle focal lengths in the Leica stable of lenses. And, when the 24mm f/3.5 lens is released next year, the S-System will have an incredible wide-angle line-up of 19, 24 and 28 equivalent focal lengths.

One of the most frequent wish-list requests we get from S2 users is to have a really good long telephoto. The Leica APO-Tele-Elmar 180mm f/3.5 is an amazingly good lens, but sometimes it just isn’t long enough. Since adapters for third party lenses became available about a year ago, we’ve been on the hunt for some options.

We’ve been experimenting with alternative lenses on the Leica S2 for the better part of a year now, trying to see which lenses perform best and offer an S2 user some kind of additional functionality or creative possibilities. Some basic lenses, like the Hasselblad 80mm f/2.8 CF, have no real benefit as the Leica 70mm Summarit-S ASPH offers a faster maximum aperture, weather sealing, autofocus and superior image quality in just about every measure. Then, we have specialty lenses. These are the ones that interest me - ones that offer something different.

I received my first demo Leica APO-Macro-Summarit-S 120mm f/2.5 this week and couldn't wait to take a few test shots to see what this lens is really capable of on the Leica S2. Unfortunately, I've been so busy getting caught up after Photokina (still working on more updates, which I will be posting soon) that the most I could manage were a few snaps around the parking lot at the store.

The long-awaited Leica Summarit-S 35mm f/2.5 ASPH lens is finally shipping, with the first units going to customers this week. Many have hoped this lens would be one of the best wide-angle offerings for medium format digital and I can attest that it doesn't disappoint. I had the opportunity to briefly test the 35mm for a weekend. Without the time to travel someplace "nice", I just took the S2 and 35mm for a walk around my neighborhood here in Hallandale Beach, Florida, then over to neighboring Hollywood Beach.

If you read my M9 review, you already know that I traveled to Germany in mid-August to test both the M9 and the S2. I was invited as part of a group of online journalists, consisting of myself, Michael Reichmann of Luminous Landscape, Sean Reid of Reid Reviews, and Phil Askey of DPReview. We had unprecedented access to key managers at Leica, an all-access pass behind the scenes at the factory in Solms, and of course, cameras to test in real-life shooting conditions.

The Leica M9 could very well be the most anticipated Leica M ever. With film users holding out for a full-frame digital M before making the switch, the tens of thousands of existing M8 users waiting to upgrade, and photographers new to Leica waiting patiently for a camera that
