just had this reply from Germany after finding a bug in the last firmware update that causes the OLED top cover to default to medium brightness with the Multifunction Grip attached

Dear Mr Cole,
Thank you very much for your message.

Please be informed that our technical department was able to reproduce the issue as you described.

It seems that this it is really an unreported bug. We thank you very much for your reporting.

Leica's dedicated technical team will identify the issue's root cause and will fix this in one of the next firmware updates. end

!! not many of you use the Grip then ??? :):

Josh Lehrer;2146 wrote: It sounds like you have a bad battery to me. That is a problem I have seen before, where the battery shows that it has some charge remaining but the camera refuses to stay on. At first I thought it was a camera issue but after trying a new battery, I realized it was a defective battery. Send it my way and I will replace it!

anyone had this problem.. both my S2s with grips show this…
email sent awaiting reply as follows..

I have noticed that with the grip attached the top cover LED is now defaulting to ‘medium’ even after setting this to ‘high’ which is most annoying in bright daylight.
the only way for me is to set it to ‘high’ when first switching on and just letting the S2 go to standby….if I switch it off then it defaults to ‘medium’ again.
can you help please ?? is there a solution via Wi-Fi firmware ??? I am using the latest 1020 firmware and have reinstalled it twice now with no resolution

Hi Stephan and albireo_double

The big problem is the Chamber size and if you use a ‘blower' there is more dust to churn up..I was told that stubborn dust should be removed with the excellent Pentax Orange OCK1 if you can get one and wet Swabs for the most difficult ‘stickies'
using a blower brush too fast will result in blowing dust back on the Sensor Filter again.
using it gently will clear the loose specks away but only into the surrounding chamber.
catch 22 or what ?
I now use the OCK1 with excellent results as long as you keep it clean after each use with the sticky paper supplied that removes particles collected on the head. I occasionally use a blower gently if there are only a few spots.
I agree it is the most difficult cleaning job of all the DSLRs

Hi All
Time for update..

I have been offered a full replacement with one S2 which I have in my possession Hurrah!! err…..
hmm !.. it has 3 ‘hot' pixels and will need re-mapping sometime. did this happen during flight to UK ? SURELY IT WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN SENT UNCHECKED FOR THIS….

I have had a further problem with the replaced Sensor unit on the other one with ‘column defect' in 4 positions..it is on its way back again from Solms and I will pick it up this week from Mayfair..I hope.

To be on the positive side I have been given a Premium Package for both units which extends my warranty by one extra year which is very welcome and at this rate probably very necessary..
further updates to this saga shortly

I may add that my batterie charger was broken, still didn't get any replacement.

And I also have some dirt in the prism from new, but not enough to give the camera back for service.

Stephen
the Ring is stuck in place with 3 small blobs of cement glue (somewhat tried and tested I presume) I was given a replacement Lens but you could D.I.Y.
BUT..the problems are if you get any on the Glass hmm!!.. the other is to align the Ring exactly in the right position…
personally, I would let someone else take the risk.
if the dirt is in the Prism and not on the Focus Screen then you should definitely get it inspected as I was told that a few others have the same problem
so frustrating I know
sorry to say that Leica have lost the respect of a few out there..

I forgot to mention that these problems were not noticable at time of purchase and developed within days of use … apart from the Multigrip attachment which was only noticed after I received it through the post

Best of luck. I'd be happy to contact S2 product management on your behalf if you want to send me a PM or email with your camera details (S/N, issues, service history, etc).

Many thanks David most helpful as usual.. I will contact you in due course if my reply from Solms is not appropriate.

I have also replaced my other S2 with a microprism screen..no problems doing this..
however, does anyone know why there is a extra smaller tab on it compared to the other screens..probably a simple answer but I can't figure it out right now.

Hi Arif
is this just a single line at exactly the same position each time ??
it looks more like a fault with the Sensor if it is.. unlike a scratch which would be more prevalent the more you close the aperture on a lighter background.. I have not seen this before on a S2 but you need to have it checked out.. how old is the Body as a few Sensors became cracked in the early supplies including one of mine.. Andy

Update of Update
I have succeeded in updating the firmware by reloading everything and removing the multifunction Battery Grip beforehand.
I do not know if this Grip had anything to do with it or not but all is OK and I look forwards to a Merry Xmas, as I do to all the Members of this Forum.
good luck in 2012 as well.

Update
I now have both S2s back from Solms… each taking 8 days from collection to arrival at my excellent dealers Richard Caplan in St James's London.
both appear to function correctly but I have been left with a dread of changing the Batteries.. ha! ha!… only a joke… I hope ?
I was impressed with the priority service awarded to me and even more with my Dealer offering me a brand new set of Trinovid 8×20 as compensation.. now that's the old fashioned service that we have sadly lost over the years and the main reason I will always buy from my Dealer.
I have tried to update the firmware to the latest v 1.0.2.0 without success.. the instructions state a file size of 7.9 Mb but the download only shows 7.55 Mb. I went through the procedure and the S2 showed the update progress as working. however it took much longer that 60 seconds and when it finished the S2 shut down but the Red function led light would not go out.. I waited about 5 minutes with a totally dead S2 until I decided to remove the Battery and reinsert it. holding my breath the S2 came to life with the old firmware 1.0.1.8 still showing.. phew !!! I don't want to try again unless I have to if I get the Elmarit-S 30. I have the superb 35 which is a bit too close for my liking..
Any else have this problem ???
many thanks to all for your comments and advice..
Andy

Many thanks for all your answers.. very helpful as usual..glad that it is straightforward..
I will definitely wait for any Xmas ‘shakes' to subside before replacing the Screen.
……Seasons greetings to all and a great new year…..

I recently had my S2 Top LED upgraded and sent to Solms who removed the top AC Maxx protector without any issue so it seems they can be removed easily. The service from AC Maxx on ebay was very good as well.

I had mine replaced too and the AC Maxx was still in place.. I was told that the OLED is replaced from inside and does not affect the top plate.
