Some of my friends on Upwork and I are thinking about changing direction or at least expanding our presence on online platforms. I specialize in illustration and 2D animation design, the rest of us in 3D. It’s just that the number of contacts has become too many. Submitting applications has become incredibly expensive.
I see a lot of complaints about this here. I’d like to ask if anyone has successfully transitioned to another system.
The platforms I’m considering are mostly UK-focused, so I’m not sure how friendly they’ll be. Starting from scratch is frustrating, but I’d love to hear recommendations for both niche and general-purpose platforms.
Or is this a losing proposition? Do all platforms charge a fee to submit applications now?

The “pay to just knock on the door” system (Connects) has become a real barrier, especially when a single opening receives 50+ applications in the first 10 minutes.
For 2D/3D animation and illustration specialists, switching to a different track isn’t a “losing proposition,” but a necessary evolution.
Starting from scratch is scary, but with your background as a Senior Designer, reaching “zero” on a specialized platform will be much faster than you think. - April 9, 2026 at 12:20 pm #51229
The situation you describe is exactly what’s being actively trumpeted in professional circles right now.
If you look at recent materials compare freelance platforms it becomes clear that giants like Upwork will have completely transitioned to a pay-to-play model in 2026, making them toxic for many professionals. Expanding their presence on other platforms isn’t just a good idea. It’s a matter of financial survival. - April 16, 2026 at 11:42 am #51395
Launching a startup or expanding a creative collective requires a massive shift toward professional self-management where you become responsible for the entire client experience from the first touchpoint. I have found that as you move away from the safety net of established platforms, the real struggle is often maintaining consistent communication with high-value leads without letting the administrative work consume your creative hours. To keep my own operations running smoothly, I integrated a dedicated appointment reminder software for small business to automate the scheduling of project consultations and feedback sessions. It has been a much more practical way to maintain a professional front and ensure that the direct relationships I am building do not fall through the cracks due to simple coordination errors.
