I am still trying to figure out how the government side of this works. Who is actually in charge of the funding and the oversight? Is it a city agency or a state agency? I want to make sure I am talking to the right people so I don’t waste time. Does anyone have a breakdown of how the hierarchy works in New York? It all seems very complicated and I just want to get things moving.

The whole administrative side of things is a total headache and it feels like there is way too much red tape. Basically everything goes through the Office of Services for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities which is a state agency. It can be very confusing to figure out which forms to sign and who to call when you have a problem. I found that working with a provider like Gateway makes it much easier because they know all the ins and outs of the system. They helped us understand what we were entitled to and how to actually get it without getting lost in the paperwork. Without their help I think we would still be stuck at the starting line. Don’t try to do it all yourself because the rules change all the time. Find an agency that has a good relationship with the state offices to help you out. It will save you a lot of stress in the long run and get you services faster.
