Pete, thanks for posting this. We have updated one of our S2 bodies with the new firmware and posted some screenshots and thoughts about this update here:

Today, Leica has released another firmware update for the S2. Continuing their trend of responding to user feedback, this update is not a bug fix, but in fact adds several new features. Below is the […]

    Nice.
That was a crop down from what?
I ask since the 120 is not 1to1 as your bee would suggest.

“A hyperfocal function that would automatically set the lens focus distance to achieve maximum DOF to infinity at any given aperture”

I believe this would be a great function to adapt to the current firmware. I utilize hyperfocal distance on my M9 kit regularily…

Thanks, Al! The Public Market used to be a favorite photo destination for me in the late 60's when I lived on Capitol Hill and shopped cameras at Olympic Camera on 4th. And even after I moved to more distant parts of Seattle. It has changed a lot over the years. For that matter the whole waterfront area was a gold mine of photo opportunities.…[Read more]

Thunderbolt is complex and *expensive* – those $50 cables may never get cheaper if there's no way around active cables.

Unfortunately Apple is reducing support for ExpressCard. If you do have an ExpressCard slot use an eSATA card and an eSATA drive. It's well-proven technology, effective and cheap.

USB has issues besides raw bandwidth.…[Read more]

    Your SSD solution sounds smart.
In my case I have an iMac for studio, and the Air will be for the road.
I thought I could avoid a laptop on the road, but on every photo trip I missed it, and my old MacBook Pro is heavy, slow, maxed at 3Gig, battery that lasts 5 minutes, etc. I have given it a new battery, new hard drive, more Ram,…[Read more]

I recently started my film journey with a Leica M4 and Summicron 50 DR about 6 months ago. Since then I've added a Minolta CLE and a few additional lenses to the mix.

I'm also strongly thinking about purchasing an M7 à la carte.

    Marc,
I agree with your observations that the S series of lenses are by far the best out there. The ability to use other brands of lenses opens up the possibilities for specialty lenses and lower cost alternatives till one can save up the funds to purchase one of those gems. While the Hassey 120 is not as crisp as the 120 S, it does put up a…[Read more]

IMO, there is no way the 40 FLE matches the S35 out to the edges. The Zeiss 40IF may come closer or match the S35, but that improved edge-to-edge performance came at the price of increased distortion over the 40FLE. The Hasselblad HC 35-90 is almost as good as the 40IF @ the 40mm mark, and it's a zoom.

So far the S35 is the best MFD wide…[Read more]

They are very, very tempting, but since I am looking at the S2, I decided to just get an SSD for my older Macbook pro. Hopefully that will give it another year or two. Are you looking at the 11″ or 13″ MBA?

I was just in the Apple Store and looked at both. If I was in the market for one ;), I'm actually not sure which way I'd go.

The 11″ is barely bigger than my gen 1 iPad and much more functional, but has a pretty small screen. The 13″ has decent screen real estate and might be a capable Portable LR…[Read more]

When we arrived at Monument Valley we were welcomed by a sand storm. The first picture is from that evening and luckily when the sun went down the storm went away as well.

The next morning we had beautiful clear weather followd by a great morning tour with Clint from Monument Valley Safari, even if we booked with another company, but this is another story. We spent a couple of hours in the valley and Clint showed us some very nice spots to take pictures. It becomes quite a Safari and at some point I felt like to stopping and just being there. Often for me it is a conflict between taking your time, being there and maybe you are getting a picture or hey let's move on, there are thousands of other places to see and obviously to take a picture of. At the end we visited the very old Navajo lady who has an uncountable number of grandchildren and she showed us a little bit of the work she has done in the past. Lovely.

The following picture is made with the D-LUX5. 😉
