Today for the first time I tried to change my avatar. Whoa! To get my head into the frame, I had to start with a given size, say 960 x 1280, then change the canvas size to 1280 x 1920 (the 960 x 1280 image now floating in the center of the larger canvas), then let the forum software crop it to the square format. I've had years to learn these…[Read more]

Stained glass inside of a frame, hanging in a restaurant. The only alteration here was where the ~70 pixel-high glass “frame” on the bottom had no color, I copied the top frame, flipped it upside down, and pasted it in at the bottom.
Leica D-Lux(109), f2.8, 1/125 handheld, ISO…[Read more]

Note in this test I'm using Center-weighted metering and One-Area AF, but the camera won't stay focused on the center subject – the logo on the person's shirt.

Thanks – besides the usual difficulties, getting such favorable lighting was due to someone opening a skylight or windows of some kind, and there were the extreme contrasts from that. But I thought the D-Lux handled it very well.

This is really very nice I think, and the bit of off-center non/semi-symmetry gives the composition a little something extra. I like the light and colors too.

I often have difficulty with these close-ups in getting spiders and other critters in focus over the whole body (or most of it).

I've been shooting this church interior occasionally with various cameras (Nikon ‘A', Panasonic GM1, Leica ‘T' and X Vario, etc.), but the D-Lux has done the best job so far, I suppose because it has the best combination of sensor size and fast lens. It isn't possible to use a tripod here, and since the best shooting location is braced against…[Read more]

The weather's been gloomy… Here's an example, shot on ‘P' (A+A for the D-Lux), where the bands of bright light in the sky forced a 1/2000 sec. shutter speed, yet the darker areas held up pretty well. With a lot of these kinds of images I shoot, the darker foliage will have the big “digital” squares of pixellation – perhaps due to shooting JPEG…[Read more]
