Is it a good idea to have your vents cleaned?
Duct cleaning has never been shown to actually prevent health problems. Neither do studies conclusively demonstrate that particle (e.g., dust) levels in homes increase because of dirty air ducts. This is because much of the dirt in air ducts adheres to duct surfaces and does not necessarily enter the living space.
I run a small laundromat, and we periodically call in commercial vent cleaning specialists for maintenance. When the ductwork gets clogged, dryers run longer, and energy consumption increases. Their commercial services page specifically mentions that clean vents help reduce energy consumption and equipment wear and tear. This is really important for a business, because every extra minute a dryer runs costs money.
