I had been using the Lightroom 4 beta and didn't notice any speed issues. In fact, it seemed very fast on my new laptop. Now that I have upgraded to the actual LR 4 release I am noticing slow downs even when zooming to 100% which was near instantaneous in the Beta version.

But as asked, why do you care? Sometimes I like to spent time to create a photo, it is part of my journey. Do I think it is the only way to make a photo? Definitely not. Most times there isn't that much time to do so. And you can continue this and continiue this and continue this… at the end I would say…

Ornello, as someone who went through an excellent photography program at the Rochester Institute of Technology, I can say that none of my professors were “techno-files”, they were talented, working photographers in a wide variety of fields, from photojournalism to high-end commercial photography. From my experience, many photography professors are…[Read more]

To elaborate:
The notion that the spontaneous or inadvertent has no part in great photography is a false one, one I find offensive, deceitful, mendacious, and repugnant.
And this needs to be said!

The Leica was designed for hand-held use. Leica lenses are designed for brilliance and lovely tonal quality above all, rather than extremely high resolution. Why? It is because resolution of the finest details can be lost with very slight camera movement anyway (hand-held, remember?) but the brilliance and ‘glow' for which Leica lenses are famous…[Read more]

Super Light Rain Gear for Photographers:
Back on the fall S2 trip with D Farkas and crew, we were shooting in pretty heavy rain one day. If one is spending money for an S2 water resistant camera, one can justify spending a fraction of that on a jacket that keeps the photographer dry.
On that trip, I had brought along a heavy rain parka…[Read more]

Okay, so I did a little bit more testing. First I took a batch of ten S2 files (all different real-life images) and processed them in LR 3.6 with my standard S2 preset. Ten images exported to 1000px wide JPG, quality 90 with screen sharpening took 38 seconds. I then ran the exact same images through LR4 two ways. The first was without adjustments,…[Read more]

About 1min 15 secs for the same number of images with the same settings. The problem manifested itself for me when I needed to process a few hundred images for upload to the web so the client could make selections. That process took well over half an hour which seemed awfully slow. But at 7.5 secs per image…it makes sense.

Field test was positive. Obviously, carrying an S2, 3 lenses, a bit RRS tripod and an Arca d4 hear is not really a pleasure, but the backpack made it bearable.
David–Again many thanks for the tip.

Thanks Mark, David and Tom. I am not sure how many S2 shots were submitted but I know for sure that I hAVE seen many here and elsewhere that would have deserved to be in the book.
