Yes, of course, the focal plane shutter! Not sure how I could have overlooked that! It also opens up some other nice options, like barrel lenses. I can see things like aero-ektars and process lenses could be fun to play with. Are you thinking of a generic graflock adapter, or similar, or are you only make something that would fit this specific…[Read more]

Hi David,
Thanks for the info. The problem I encountered is the software from Sekonic. As you may find a demo video on YouTube, it only read jpeg files. I have tried full resolution tiff with no adjustment but the software generated un-usable curves. What I will do tomorrow when I am back to the studio is to down size the tiff and see if…[Read more]

Bobby,
Interesting test. I'm curious about your testing process. Assuming that the JPG for testing was generated from the DNG, how did you process the file?
If using LR, I'd strongly suggest lowering the Black Point from the default of 5 to 2. This alone will give you back some DR in the shadows that the software is clipping. In fact…[Read more]

Hi all,
I have used the Data Transfer Software from Sekonic and the Exposure Profile Target II Grey Chart to measure the S2's exposure dynamic range at both ISO 160 and 320 using Broncolor studio flashes.
Attached is the result. The image files for the measuring software are in jpeg format so the actual dynamic range when shooting in Raw…[Read more] -

Hi Arun,
Nice shots. Is the one in your last post driving past Hana? Have you done the whole tour along Piilani Highway?

Thanks Doug. Yes, the first one is moonlight early am outside our hotel on Kaanapali beach. Best thing about coming from the East is waking up at 4 am (Hawaii time) for the first few days.
The black sand beach was on the road to Hana. Quite a road going there but even tougher if you keep going – very narrow, rough, winding roads. Most…[Read more]

Not confused but maybe misinformed. I did a LR class with Kevin Ames …the photoshop guru that writes about beauty retouching. He was all over the use of the clarity slider and was recommending very high settings (for landscapes) . I know on the Leica files that clarity around 20 works for me but on the Nikon files I go up to 50 . Marc is…[Read more]

Very nice collection of shots, cleverly avoiding typical vacation snapping! 🙂 I think my fav is the first one, which I'm guessing is in moonlight. Lovely colors, reflection. And I like that black sand beach pic too… what is that location; road to Hana?

Thanks for the information David! That photo looks very well sharpened too. I will experiment with higher levels and see if I can't be won over. I will have to see how it works in big prints too, as that is my main criteria…I usually use photokit's output sharpener in tandem, so it may act differently if the capture sharpening technique is different…

I'm far from a LR guru and still prefer a round trip to CS5 for most adjustments. But I'd be willing to bet a couple of bucks that Roger is NOT confused about anything in LR.
