The last time I stepped off the train at Howrah, the sheer scale of the station felt like a city of its own. Between the thousands of commuters and the iconic yellow taxis, finding your bearings is an art form. I remember trying to negotiate a ride once near the Hooghly River, only to realize that “local rates” for a foreigner involve a lot of creative math. It’s a beautiful, chaotic gateway to Kolkata, but if you’ve got heavy bags and the humidity is peaking, the last thing you want is a long walk to the prepaid stand. I’m planning a trip back to explore the historic architecture around North Kolkata and I’ve been calculating the sonagachi distance to make sure I don’t waste half my day in gridlock. To keep things simple, I’ve decided to book my ride through GetTransfer. It’s such a relief to have a driver waiting with a sign near the exit, especially since you can pick a car with decent AC—essential if you want to arrive at your destination without looking like you’ve been steamed.

Does anyone have tips for the best time to cross the Howrah Bridge to avoid the worst of the rush hour? I’d love to get some clear photos of the bridge from the car window without being stuck on it for an hour!
