Today, we have received the official word from Leica that the new Leica Vario-Elmar-S 1:3.5-5.6/30-90mm ASPH lens has begun shipping in the United States. Like many new Leica products, initial quantities of this lens will be small, but I would expect to see deliveries ramp up over the next month or two.
As the first zoom lens for the Leica S system, the 30-90mm has been highly anticipated since its formal announcement in 2012 at Photokina, and even before as Leica previously mentioned they were working on such a design. David and I are both very excited to use this lens, and compare it to some of the superb fixed focal length S lenses that are already on the market. Stay tuned!

Amazing Images. As a Porsche lover myself I am overdue for a trip to the museum. I will of course have to drive the Nurburgring as well.

It was one single shot of one of my favorite drivers. I was fortunate enough to get him at the right time! It is still a usable image and I stand by it.Thanks Pete,

Nice stuff Scott! I can't wait to see some of the photos from the actual race weekend. I'll agree with Mark that the focus on the last shot is a bit off, but for someone who JUST got a Noctilux and is really new to the M system, you are doing amazing things with it. Keep it up!

Scott, I like the series. They provide a more personal viewpoint of the racing scene. The thin DOF works well in most cases, but it can be tough to get in the correct place with a rangefinder. For example, in the last photo the plane of focus is on the neck instead of the eyes unless that was intentional.

Fortunately, the camera and lens combination are smart enough to know when you are wanting to shoot at the wide-open aperture. For example, if you are at f3.5 with the lens zoomed to 30mm, then zoom to 90mm the aperture goes to f5.6, but when you zoom back to 30mm the aperture goes back to f3.5 just as it should.

Hi Andy. I had read the Leica info but a) they only say the f-stop at 35, 60 and 90mm, and at 90mm they say f5.0 which seems wrong? because it should be f5.6 at 90mm?

Hi.. I would just like to add that the update also addressed a issue I had reported whereby the top OLED kept defaulting to ‘Medium' when the S2 was off with a multi Battery Grip attached…I like to keep it brightest in daylight as a quick reference before Shoot.

Ddanois we are just as excited as you to get our hands on this lens. I believe they will begin shipping in the USA next week, although I won't make a formal announcement until I have 100% confirmation. Keep an eye on the main page of Red Dot Forum for updates.
