Hi David – If you could tomorrow, maybe a couple snapshots with a cellphone of the new menu “look”. Just curious 🙂 Some more serious questions/requests –
1) Want to see a picture of this 5-way mini joystick controller
2) Is the new S2 actually lighter? The specs see to indicate it is.
3) Is ISO visible in the viewfinder?
4) Have…[Read more] -

I saw the new S camera today at the event and talked to a few folks at Leica about some of the behind the scenes goodies. While I think the upgrades are indeed evolutionary, they are some of the most often requested ones. The new screen (same used on new M, btw) is really, really nice. There is a new menu system, but it was in German and I didn't…[Read more]

Roger,
The 180 3.4 was a great lens at infinity but not as good near-mid range as the Apo Elmarit. Also the near to far on the 3.4 was over one revolution if I recall. With the 1.4x + 180 you have quite a long lens in a small package for travel.I need to stop talking about this or my wallet will be much lighter!

Discount your present S2 and factor in the upgrade cost…you may end up paying quite a bit for the new S2.005 warranty. Probably a better deal for a new buyer.
The camera has been fairly problem free for me…hard to see where I will spend the upgrade costs…

Maybe this will help justify the upgrade;)
The current Leica warranty on the S2 is one year and additional years are $1700+ . So 3 years of warranty has a value of $5100 . I would also expect that (1)looking at the introductions from Phase and HB and (2) the much better availability of S lenses (with an option to use the HB H glass) makes…[Read more]

My understanding is that the sensor is made by the european specialty producer and not Sony . So there is hope .
The 180ApO is an interesting option but I fear too big to balance on the M body . The newest 180/2.8 APO is one of my favorite lenses and I carried the DMR just to use it . It pairs perfectly with the 1.4XAPO extender . That is…[Read more]

After an incredible day of announcements from Leica, there are a slew of new products in the Leica lineup. My thoughts on a few:
Leica M: The highly anticipated successor to the hugely popular Leica M9, this looks like a dream come true for me. As a frequent user of the M9, I can't say there are too many things I would improve upon, but as usual, Leica has exceeded my expectations. A few of the most exciting improvements:
- A new, 24 megapixel full frame CMOS sensor that promises to offer fantastic high ISO performance (ISO6400!).
- Live view with focus peaking for precise framing and focusing
- Optional electronic viewfinder
- To go along with live view, a new adapter that allows the use of Leica R lenses. Hello super telephoto and macro!
- High resolution, 3 inch, 920k dot LCD screen
- Improved battery life
- Multi-pattern and spot metering (the M9 had only center weighted metering available)
- Full HD video capture with an option stereo microphone attachment
- Weather-resistant body
- Maestro image processor – this is similar to what's found in the Leica S and S2
Basically, this is a laundry list of everything I would have wanted improved or added from the M9. Most excited of all is the ability to use live view for super-accurate focusing, along with the ability to use an entire lineup of new lenses. Previously the longest lens available for the M was 135mm. Now with the R system, you can use an 800mm lens on your digital M camera! I am confident this will be the best-selling Leica M camera of all time. It still looks and works like a classic M, with all of the modern features that make it versatile to a wide variety of users.
Along with the new M, a few new accessories have been released. The most interesting of the group is the new Leica M Multi-functional handgrip which has a few unique features. It will allow tethered shooting with the Leica M, GPS geotagging of images, the ability to use an AC adapter for unlimited shooting time, and the attachment of finger loops, first seen on the M9 Titan.
Leica M-E: This new offering combines the well-loved, 18 megapixel CCD of the M9 in a new and lovely anthracite grey body. Priced at $5,450 this is a great way to get into a digital, full frame Leica or for a second body. I think it is a very smart move from Leica to offer their customer base this new camera, a slight refresh of a timeless classic.
Overall, an extremely productive day for Leica and an exciting group of new products. Stay tuned for more!

One might assume that the S2 production and research cost have been amortized and really other that a couple of $25 ASICs and Gorilla Glass…which has been used on a couple billiion Cell Phones….nothing new but a bit of FW massaging.
So their net profit per camera is up?
Sounds good to me….
Doubt that any of this is a reason…[Read more]

. . .What is more amazing is the price is $1K less that the S2 with two extra years warranty. I think this is a first for Leica, lowering the price of a new, more featured camera!

Roger,
The CCD to CMOS is the uncertainty, will the files still have the nice rich look to it? As I understand, the sensor was made to Leica specifications so it should be a lot closer than the Sony generic sensor look.I could see a 180 Apo Elmarit and the M, nice and small for travel for a longer reach when needed. I am sure that more…[Read more]

PebblePlace;3105 wrote: If the S came with a new sensor delivering either CMOS or more pixels, the upgrade would be more compelling. But I'm happy with 37.5 MP, so an improved camera works for me. Having owned several Phase One backs, most recently the P65+, the S2 does not match Phase One's performance at base ISO. Now that the S' base ISO is running at 100, which presumably is much closer to the sensor's native ISO, ISO 100 could look much cleaner, smoother than the outgoing S2. We'll have to see real-world results, but we could finally…[Read more]
