Really? I still shot when on the run with dng and jpg. I will instantly give it a try.

  • If you’ve been following me on Twitter, you probably know that I arrived in Berlin earlier today. After getting situated in my room and chatting up a good number of familiar Leica faces in the lobby of the Hotel Meliá, I got to briefly explore a tiny part of the city on the other side of the Spree River while grabbing a very late lunch/slightly early dinner. In untypical fashion (for me at least), I went on a 2 mile walk without any major camera gear. All I had was my D-Lux 5 and I wasn’t really looking to take pictures. Truth be told, I was hungry and still a bit tired after 18 hours of travel. I also needed to get back to the hotel to freshen up and get ready for a night out.

Sorry, I thought this was funny

Since I was arriving a day early, Dr. Andreas Kaufmann was kind enough to extend an invitation for me to join him, along with members of the supervisory board and other top people from Leica Camera, for a special performance of the 12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic. These fourteen individuals (somebody’s not so good at math), are among the best cellists in the world. An all-cello ensemble made for a unique, beautiful, and powerful, yet gentle sound. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and appreciated the opportunity to spend time with some of my friends at Leica.Fast forward a few beers with even more Leica folks in the hotel bar and I am back in my room, getting ready for tomorrow’s big event.

Back in March, some save the date emails for a mysterious Leica event in Berlin got posted online; a few major rumors and a flood of predictions have been circulating ever since. In less than 24 hours, we’ll know for sure and I’m super excited for the official announcements. Those that know me and have followed my reporting in the past, know that I am a major gear-head. I absolutely love product launches like this. Yes, the logical part of my brain has a pretty good idea what is coming based on past conversations I’ve had with product managers and executives, along with historical release patterns. But, the little kid in me can’t wait for the big event to start so I can soak in all the new product goodness as it happens.

Join me on Twitter for live updates and pictures from the event, then make sure to check back here on Red Dot Forum for detailed analysis after the dust settles.

Hi David! Thanks for the reply. Since posting this I have tried to retrieve the data doing exactly what you describe. However, the EXIF viewer data does not show anything called Unique Image ID. The only data field that might be close to what you are describing is the following:

    EXIF Version {0x9000} 0220

I use the Panasonic EW-DJ10A for sensor cleaning. It reduces the chance for scratching by moistening as it pushes the dust away.

  • Thank you for the compliments gentlemen. Shooting in manual focus really is challenging, can't wait for a long lens solution. Shooting side by side with all of the Canons and Nikons with long glass and VR, oh, and AF made me envious and yearn for younger (functioning) eyes. It is interesting that even at f11 the DOF is extremely shallow and…[Read more]

I know that heart sinking feeling of realizing there is a problem with your sensor. It's even worse when you are the one that caused it. It will be a long time (if ever) before I will wet clean my S2 sensor again. I am glad your experience turned out so well.

  • Great images Al. I especially like the space needle photo. I also agree with you that we need a long tele S lens.

  • Awesome shot. Great work.

I have been to Haleakala, but without any proper pollution the moon wasn't that much bigger. 😉 On top of that 120mm is way to short for the moon.

I promised to post some more examples of “correct wide angle” filter in CS6

Usually when I merge I use “cylindrical” merge rather than “perspective”, because as this example shows, the perspective merge is usually lopsided. If anyone knows how to avoid for that, please let me know.

In my search for a 14mm S lens, this is my work…[Read more]

  • David,
No double exposure, the balance of light, sun rising while the moon set balanced out the exposure. Actually, the moon moves rather rapidly at that magnification making stacking of any kind pretty difficult, unless you can shoot at 11fps of course. Next month the timing may be a bit better as the sun and moon will be rising/setting at…[Read more]

    Al,

This is other-worldly. Awesome shot. Did you shoot multiple exposures to get the moon and the Space Needle balanced?

  • Hi Doug

I was given a demonstration one to try out first and although a bit too expensive I was somewhat impressed with the handling and decided to purchase one.

Must have been the rocket blower but just in case I've stopped cleaning my sensors with the gas station tire pumps. As for my models… they're more likely to melt the lens;)

  • The opening was indeed enjoyable and the Leica staff is to be complimented for making
each visitor feel welcome. The presentation was interesting and well received.

Enjoyed seeing David and Josh who kindly introduced me to the leica staff.
