Today, we received a unique new product to test, which Dale Photo & Digital has now made available for sale: the Leica S Right Angle Finder. Prior to discovering this product, there was no reasonable way to use a right angle finder on the S or S2. Now, not only do we gain the ability to use the right angle viewer, but we can also focus more precisely as the finder features a switch that toggles between 1x and 2x magnification.
The finder is made from solid metal by M. Leibfritz in Germany. The product description on Dale Photo's site sums it up well:
A new product manufactured by M. Leibfritz in Germany, the Leica S Right Angle Finder mounts to your Leica S or Leica S2 camera to provide right-angle viewing, ideal for macro photography or low-mounted camera work. This product also features a built-in 2x magnifier; flip a switch to toggle between 1x and 2x magnification.
The finder rotates 360 degrees to make for easy viewing no matter how your camera is positioned, and the 2x magnification allows for precise focus adjustment. Additionally, the finder has a built-in focusing mechanism to account for users who need diopter adjustment.
The viewfinder is made from solid metal and has a removable rubber eyecup. It attaches to the camera via the hot shoe; please be aware that with the use of this finder, hot-shoe mounted accessories such as a flash or radio trigger cannot be used.
At the moment, this item is made to order only. If we receive enough interest, Dale Photo & Digital will begin to stock this item. The finder can be viewed for purchase on our website here: Leica S Right Angle Finder. Email me with questions or inquiries!

Thanks and I did compare them already. The 30mm seems to be slightly better as a prime. It is S shaped and I was just wondering if it can be corrected easily. The only way is to see a real lens shooting grids at this point for an easy answer. I did contact Leica and seemed to get no answer.
Through experience my Nikon 17-35 f2.8 was so…[Read more]

Thanks so much for your insight. Yes I am more curious about getting the most out of it than saving bad exposures. I am used to bracketing and merging files with my current small format and have seen some samples of an IQ260 with 13 stops dynamic range. The photographer showed me 100% view of an interior mall storefronts where light and shadows…[Read more]

I have not had the chance to test this myself but Leica Camera offers very thorough lens data documents on their downloads page (at the bottom):
http://www.s.leica-camera.com/en/DOWNLOADS
The documents include distortion charts, among other things, and you could compare the distortion of the 30-90mm to the fixed focal length lenses too!

I find the dynamic range of the S sensor to be all that I really need, I couldn't really quantify it because I don't believe that measurement ever really means anything. I will say that I don't have any difficulty recovering highlights that are 2+ stops over exposed, but I rarely attempt to recover extremely deep shadows because that's always…[Read more]

How is the dynamic range? I am intrigued by the large dynamic range in MF but also a little scared to commit to a body and sensor that cannot be upgraded. Do you forsee benefit of more dynamic range? Have you done a 3 stop over and under test to see if you can get the detail back? Would appreciate your thoughts.

Just got mine back–took less than a week from them to do the repair and they did not charge.
BTW, at least in the EU, Leica arranged a free of charge pick up by DHL. I would email the S2 customer service address which you find on their website rather than the general customer service email.
Good luck

Because the sensor cracking issue is a known manufacturer defect, it will be a free repair for the lifetime of the camera (or at least as long as parts are available) so Leica will repair the cracked sensor free of charge even if the camera is out of warranty.

Thanks for your answer, I was wondering whether it's still under warranty as I bought S2 since Sep 2010.
Thank you.

Yes, that is a cracked sensor. The camera needs to go to Leica for repair. The good news is that the repair will be covered under warranty, and they'll do a full “clean and check” of the camera while they have it.
