And this is the reason that I don't care much about S3 as I think I'm still not utilized S2 enough. However, it will make more sense if S3 can make some improvement in high ISO + a little high bursting. In addition, I'm really looking forward to wireless shutter provided by Leica.

    Veerachai,

With regards to wireless shutter release, have you seen this: Wireless Triggering the Leica S2?

For what appear to be spots? That would definitely be a job for Leica. David F would tell you he uses LR spot remover in post production, or back to Leica, he never touches his sensors, probably because he experiences so many horror stories from those who do. Right David?

Well…. first off, I use a Giottos rocket blower to remove loose dust. Ask Jack points out there can be a small amount of propellant that can come out of the nozzle, so I stay away from canned air. And, yes, I usually just remove whatever remains in Lightroom with the spot removal tool. The dust generally only shows in blue sky areas, not in areas of detail. Removing spots from the sky is really quick and easy.

For really dirty sensors, I will either send to Leica for warranty cleaning or use the local camera repair shop for same-day service. They do a great job on sensor cleanings and we haven't had any issues so far.

I really haven't heard too many “horror stories” about sensor cleanings. There is one about an S2 sensor getting scratched, but only because the cleaning swab was cheap and the plastic edge came through the cleaning material on the swab. If you stick to brands like Eclipse you should be fine if you decide to clean yourself.

    Marc,

    Thanks for doing this test!

It's awesome that the HTS works on the S2 in spite of what Leica has stated. I'm pretty sure that when the HTS is used on an H body, the amount of tilt in degrees and shift in mm is passed through into the metadata and there is some kind of auto correction going on. Obviously, this isn't happening on the S2.

I'd be extremely curious how the HTS and the 28 HCD work on the S2. Wanna give it a whirl for us? 😉

I'll let you know. I had the 21/2.8 Leica and sold that as I was not that impressed with the rendering and the hood was a bit problematic.

I also have a Contax CY 21mm 2.8 with an LM mount adapter that i am going to try. As you can tell, I have WAYYYY too many lenses and not enough time…

    Victor,

I'm curious if the C/Y and the ZM optical formula are the same. Knowing your collection, I'd second the too many lenses comment. Of course, it could be argued that there is no such thing as too many lenses. 😀

    Tom,

Perhaps it is the differences in microcontrast and bokeh rending that gives the impression of more/less DOF…. Basically, just a different optical fingerprint.

Jack, I just read the article as well. I'll second what Josh said.

The S2 uses lossless compression. There is no difference whatsoever in image quality. Test this for yourself.

I'll restrain myself from correcting the other bits of misinformation at this time, but let's just say that I would take it all with a large grain of salt.

    Georg,

The Schneider filters are a lot easier to work with as you can do your focus and composition, then either slide the ND filters into place or unclip/reclip the entire holder from the lens.

I had previously tried 4″ resin filters and was disappointed with the quality and their propensity for scuffing and attracting dust (even when stored and cleaned properly). The Schneider glass filters are much higher quality both in terms of image quality and durability/ease of cleaning.

Mark brings up a good point. The new IRND from Schneider eliminate the IR color cast from high ND corrections. As you increase the ND factor more and more visible light is blocked, but IR is still allowed to pass. As the exposure gets longer a higher and higher percentage of IR and near IR passes through. The result is a magenta color shift. The new IRND coating filters out the IR as well, resulting in neutral color.

    Jack, you got me. 😉

BTW are you seeing only a part of the image and have to scroll to see the rest? I thought linking to a picture will extend the post width? But it does not here. Next time I will upload them again.

    Pete,

In order to properly display on iPads (yes even Retina iPads) and other mobile devices, I recently changed Red Dot Forum to a fixed width layout.

If you upload to the site using the Manage Attachments button, the software will generate a 550px wide image for your post and link to the full-size original in a new tab. If you link to an image URL it will cut off if larger than 600px wide.

Any explanation on why the extender and extension tubes will not work? I can understand the TS adapter due to the extra software commands but the extender and extension tubes should just pass right through. Thoughts?

    Al

    Al,

I'm not entirely sure, but my guess is that the extra layer of communication with the additional piece added too much complexity. For example, with an extender, aperture and focal length both change, but will depend given the lens being extended. This information needs to be communicated to the camera.

Maybe this is something that Leica can add via firmware at a later point.

Anyone can attend Photokina (about 160,000 people attended last show). It is held in Cologne, Germany every other September (even years).

    I should be there.

I think a Red Dot Forum meetup would be great!

I'm also considering the hood, to primarily reduce incidents of flare, but see the hood is very shallow. Is the hood beneficial/necessary for this lens?

Honestly, I don't have a lot of experience with this Zeiss lens vs. the Leica 28mm Elmarit ASPH, so I can't make a recommendation one way or the other.

If you do decide to purchase the lens, we have a mint condition used one for sale at $995. Here's a few photos of the actual lens (not stock):
