No idea on price, but I'm expecting Leica to show the lens along with the 24mm f/3.5 at Photokina in two weeks. We'll have a all the details then…. and yes, I will be attending and reporting.

  • The drama is simple. A mistake will cost you several thousand dollars. The S2 sensor is designed with the cover glass glued onto the sensor. You can't just replace the cover glass, you have to replace the entire sensor if the cover glass gets scratched. Also, please note that is pretty easy to scratch the coating on the cover glass.

    I had…[Read more]

  • PebblePlace;3031 wrote: Just curious, has Leica ever posted anything about the size and weight for the 30-90 zoom? I'm hoping the slower aperture translates into a lighter lens in the 2 pound range. Anyways, just curious if anybody has seen any details about the lens. Thanks.

I've been told that the 30-90mm is roughly the same size and…[Read more]

  • I can assure you that Lightroom 4 fully supports the S2. In fact, LR4 is included when you buy a S2. Leica and Adobe seem to have an excellent relationship. In fact, this link shows that the latest release candidate for LR4 includes profiles for S lens that haven't even been released yet.

  • Visible Dust makes sensor swabs sized for the S2 and they have good products for wet cleaning. However, wet cleaning should be a last resort. First try a blower, then light brush (Visible Dust makes good brushes as well). If it is oil on your sensor as you suspect, a wet clean will be necessary. However, it takes a brave person to do it yourself.…[Read more]

  • Our first delivery arrives tomorrow (Tuesday)! I'll be posting a few photos on Red Dot so stay tuned.

  • Sorry…. can't make any guarantees on submersion… 😉

This shot really works as a triptych! Nice stuff, Jack.

And this is the reason that I don't care much about S3 as I think I'm still not utilized S2 enough. However, it will make more sense if S3 can make some improvement in high ISO + a little high bursting. In addition, I'm really looking forward to wireless shutter provided by Leica.

  • I agree with Pete – film does still rule! I know when I spoke to you yesterday you said you had your own dark own where you processed the film. Do you process the BW prints there as well, or do you scan the film and do all the post-processing digitally?

For what appear to be spots? That would definitely be a job for Leica. David F would tell you he uses LR spot remover in post production, or back to Leica, he never touches his sensors, probably because he experiences so many horror…

    Mark:

I avoid any kind of wet cleaning of the M9 sensor, I find it tends to make things worse. I frequently use a Giottos Rocket Blower to blow surface dust off the sensor. For more thorough cleanings, I send the camera to a local service shop that will do a wet cleaning with the proper facilities and equipment. A few touch-ups in Lightroom…[Read more]

    Marc,

    Thanks for doing this test!

It's awesome that the HTS works on the S2 in spite of what Leica has stated. I'm pretty sure that when the HTS is used on an H body, the amount of tilt in degrees and shift in mm is passed through into the metadata and there is some kind of auto correction going on. Obviously, this isn't happening on the…[Read more]

I'll let you know. I had the 21/2.8 Leica and sold that as I was not that impressed with the rendering and the hood was a bit problematic.

Perhaps it is the differences in microcontrast and bokeh rending that gives the impression of more/less DOF…. Basically, just a different…[Read more]

Jack, I really like this one!

  • Jack, I just read the article as well. I'll second what Josh said.

The S2 uses lossless compression. There is no difference whatsoever in image quality. Test this for yourself.

I'll restrain myself from correcting the other bits of misinformation at this time, but let's just say that I would take it all with a large grain of salt.

  • David Farkas replied to the topic Filter system for the S2 in the forum S2 13 years ago

    Georg,

The Schneider filters are a lot easier to work with as you can do your focus and composition, then either slide the ND filters into place or unclip/reclip the entire holder from the lens.

I had previously tried 4″ resin filters and was disappointed with the quality and their propensity for scuffing and attracting dust (even when…[Read more]

    Georg,

Take a look at the Schneider filters that David sells. They are exceptional. Graduated neutral density filters are available and solid neutral density filters are also available. I bought the one that has IR correction. Unfortunately, I have been so busy at work I haven't had a chance to compare it to my Lee Big Stopper. The Big…[Read more]
