I've found that shooting a plain blue sky, or plain white sky possibly, then viewing at 100 percent, you can see even the smallest dust.

My first butterfly with the Leica D-Lux(109) — the original image was 4112 pixels wide, which I cropped to 2200 wide and resized up slightly. I thought this was a really good example of image quality given the crop to only 3.6 mp.

You have a big ol' sensor spot to the right of the rightmost building, and a few smaller spots. Excellent photos though!!

Second day's images and impressions of the Leica D-Lux typ109 (twin of the Panasonic LX100). A couple things that I hope are fixed in new firmware are: 1) There's no ability to turn the camera on in playback mode AFAIK, which can lead to problems…. 2) The zoom resume feature causes a problem at turn-on when using the lenscap string when the…[Read more]

I sent a request for a detailed comparison of the S typ 007 and the S-E (both new models I presume). Given the astounding price difference, there must be significant compromises with the S-E, and I'd like to see the complete list.

My first photos (taken as JPEG only) with the new Leica D-Lux (typ 109) – these were taken in a gloomy rainy environment, approximately 20 minutes before sunset, albeit the clouds were so thick that it wasn't possible to see where the Sun actually was. The tree resolved well given the flat lighting, but the landscape foliage didn't fare so well.…[Read more]

wide-open on the M9, ISO 2500.

I will be writing an article comparing the Xenon and the uncoated/pre-war Sonnar 5cm F1.5 on the M9 and M Monochrom.

I picked this lens up a few months ago for $400 off ebay- had some internal Haze. I got some tips for disassembly on Leicaplace, was able to get to the inner surfaces with the issues. The glass cleaned up nicely. This is an uncoated lens, 7 elements in 5 groups. After using it on the M Monochrom and M9- I'm impressed. More flare that the Summarit,…[Read more]

Kirsten Vignes wrote a new post, Leica V-Lux (Typ 114) Review: The Swiss Army Knife of Cameras 11 years, 5 months ago
Leica Camera once again led the way at Photokina this past September with the announcement of several new, large-sensor compact cameras including: the Leica X (Typ 113), Leica X-E (Typ 112), ย Leica D-Lux (Typ 109) […]-
First, I'd suggest using Adobe Lightroom, not Apple Photos to process the RAWfiles from the V-Lux. Secondly, the Col Effects apply only to JPGs generated in camera, not to RAWfiles. If you are shooting RAW only, you wouldn't see the effects in the computer.
-
Bill,
We always recommend shooting in RAW and processing in the latest version of Lightroom. LR5 is a bit long in the tooth. I'd suggest you subscribe to the Adobe CC Photography Plan which includes Lightroom Classic CC and Photoshop CC.

Though this original review is now 11 years old (I'm writing this in the Fall of 2025), I found it both intriguing and helpful as I was considering the purchase of a lightly-used V-Lux Typ 114. I went ahead and bought the camera and must say that, so far, it's a delightful and versatile photographic device. In spite of its relative bulk, it is surprisingly lightweight, and AF is much quicker than I had expected. Confession: some years ago I owned another large superzoom bridge camera, the generally highly regarded Sony RX10 Mark IV, which had a superb (and enormous) Zeiss branded zoom lens with a fixed f/2.8 maximum aperture. It was also surprisingly heavy, and the Sony menus were irritatingly complex (to me) and non-intuitive. The Typ 114 feels significantly lighter in hand – a result of its largely thermoplastic body & lens construction, as opposed to the RX10M4's heavier metal frame – but the 114 feels almost svelte. And, so far at least, its Pana-Leica lens rivals the Sony-Zeiss one in quality. I have to say that, even 11 years later, this is a very VERY cool camera. So my thanks to you, Kirsten, for the initial review ๐

The S-E has a one year warrantee vs three for the type 007
The S-E is really the same as the former type 006 introduced two years ago
The S-E is CCD sensor, the type 007 is CMOS so it has live view and higher ISO.
The 007 can take 4K video, etc. etc.
