Today, Leica has announced firmware update version 1.0.2.0 for the Leica S2. This update adds support for the new Leica Elmarit-S 30mm f/2.8 ASPH. Below is the official press release:

This fifth firmware update is specially developed for the use of the camera with the new Leica Elmarit-S 30 mm f/2.8 ASPH. wide-angle lens, ensuring optimum functionality of the lens on the Leica S2 body. Registered S users wishing to bring their camera up-to-date can download the firmware update from the โOwners Areaโ on the Leica website and take advantage of the latest improvements.

Does it do anything other than accommodate the new 30mm?
As far as we can tell, the firmware only adds support for the 30mm.
As I won’t buy the new 30mm, do you still advise to apply the new firmware?

Always a good idea to keep the camera current with firmware (just in case there are other improvements/changes under the hood that we don’t know about).
I downloaded mine yesterday and agree with Dave that one should remain up to date even if one does not ahve that particular lens…. yet! :p:p:p
