After many attempts, I have finally got a ring flash system working for the kind of macro work that I like to do (insects, field). I spent some time working with the Metz Mecablitz 15 MS-1 to see if I can get it to fire and give good results with the S System. Success with a normal Pc flash synchro…

one thing I allways wonder: When I activate the AF with the shutter release button in S-AF mode the camera will not “fire” before accurate focus is achieved. So I know it is focus priority.

However when I use the rear button to activate AF I do not know if the camera is done with fine focus. So it is kind of…

  • We always recommend using the rear button set to AF-S and the focus mode set to MF. Works great for hand-held work to lock on then shoot as well as tripod-mounted work where you are trying maximize DOF by manually setting to hyperfocal. When you press the shutter, the camera doesn't try to auto focus between shots.

  • fotografz;6177 wrote: Thank you for doing that David.

I will try your suggestion tonight and report back.

I am also in contact with Leica USA … but will try this first.

    Again, thank you!

    Any luck, Marc?

Fiddling with the set-up, I pressed the two outer buttons to reset the SF58 … but held them down … reset flashed 3 times and then went out. I was then able to see TTL-HSS in the menu selection and select it.

Sounds good until I saw that the lens f/stop was still not matching that of the camera nor the ISO…

Yes, I know it is supposed to only work on TTL-HSS … and that is the way it worked before.

Suddenly, TTL-HSS is not available at all in the SF58 selection menu, but TTL is there … then, the camera and flash will fire in just TTL up to 1/4000 in CS mode and up to 1/125 in FP mod…

Interesting approach. I'm trying to think about how this could be implemented without creating a possible stumbling block. Imagine you pick up the camera, forget to change the focus zone and end up either thinking the lens is broken or missing a shot because you were fumbling with the menus.

    Any thoughts?

  • fotografz;6164 wrote: I have two SF58s that worked fine all last year.

Now neither seems to be communicating with the camera correctly.

The ISO on the flash's LCD doesn't match that set on the S2. I cannot set ETTL in the mode selection … only TTL, A, M and pulse is available … BUT, the flash does fire in TTL. The flash fires in TTL wit…

    I will wait.

Your answer on the S vs S2 thread reminded me that I still have that Pentax 6×7 400 mm with some strange outer flanges that won't fit your adaptor. If I sent you the 400 and the body, perhaps your machinist can invent an adaptor that can do the job. My alternative is to buy a Contax 350 used and a Contax to S adaptor,…

Since reading about this offer I too have been in a bit of a quandary. Like you (well not really as an amateur), I also own, and have thoroughly enjoyed the S2P! Didn't do the S upgrade as I didn't feel the value was there. Opinions expressed are all very valid and I will continue monitoring the…

  • First off, some clarifications of details on the trade-in promotion and the warranty on the S (Typ 006):

    • The trade-in promotion goes from April 1, 2014 through June 30, 2014. Any SLR camera may be traded in for the $5,000 credit. So, yes, Jack could trade in his Pentax 6×7. Or, you could trade in an old Nikon D70. Doesn't…

Other than using WiFi SD card, is there a way to tether the S2 and/or M to an iPad?

A WiFi card is the only way we know of to tether an S2 or S to an iPad. An iPad can't run desktop software, only iOS apps,…[Read more]

  • I used the 30-90 extensively on our recent Monument Valley workshop, more than any other lens.

    What I liked:

    • Not heavy in actual use
    • Great to be able to tweak composition slightly without changing lenses
    • Great to be able to use in-between settings (I used 60mm quite a bit)
    • Nice to keep one filter set on

  • Good points, Marc and Al.

It's funny that so many people ask for increased dynamic range, then complain that the files from new cameras with increased DR look “flat” or “have lost the magical look of X”. As you point out, this is just learning a new set of processing techniques.

I get around the flatness that comes with increased…[Read more]

The CS works in sync, up to 1/1000. Of course at that speed there's not much flash light left, but envirenmental portraits at ~ 2.5 meters shouldn't be a problem at 1/250 – 1/500

  • Rather than going with the same Sony 44×33 CMOS sensor, perhaps Leica will work with CMOSIS to develop their own in-house solution, as they did for the M240.

There hasn't been too much discussion around it, but the CMOSIS/Leica chip in the M is actually the most advanced CMOS sensor design to date. The pixel well depth is significantly…[Read more]
