    Pete,

Sorry to hear about your mishap.

The 120 lens is the only S lens that isn't an internally focusing design. We use (and recommend) the rear button for AF activation and have never had an issue updating firmware. Usually, we update firmware with the 70mm attached so it has never been an issue.

I'd also suggest not resting the camera on the front of the lens. With the 120, even when the camera wakes from sleep, the lens will do it's little initialization “dance”. If you have it resting lens-down, there is a good chance of damaging the focus motor or gearing.

The chrome finish really is nice and the new leatherette cover a lot grippier. With all of the new cameras on the market competing for your hard earned money, I would still have to say that the X2 should receive some serious consideration. Compared to say the newly released Olympus OM-D, the simplicity of the X2 design trumps all of the whiz bang of the OM-D. My X1, which I have been very pleased with, is only improved upon with the X2 design.

If you want a camera that will produce great images with little thought, the X series is, in my opinion, the one to consider.

    Al,

Did you hack my computer and read my draft of the X2 review?! 😉

just to let you know that after a visit to Leica Mayfair UK today it was realised that the Adaptor was indeed faulty and the Lens was in perfect working order.. in fact the Lens had only 48 actuations and was the latest one.. wow that was a good one to keep !!
I was given a new exchange and everything is as it should be with focus snapping sharply without ‘hunting'
I can now give a 5 star rating for the H Adaptor S and the benefits that you get with using CS and FP as Leica intended, albeit without the superior Glass.

Glad to hear everything worked out.

    Thanks for the tip David.

It isn't so much that the screen came loose, but rather that it may not have been seated 100% perfectly when it was installed.

    Thanks.

    Georg,

I updated my entire catalog to LR4.1. No issues and 4.1 is noticeably faster than 4.0. Totally worth it. The added CA and defringing tools are really, really nice as well.

I'd recommend making a backup of your LR catalog before upgrading. This is always good practice.

Thank you for your reply. The operative phrase, ” This can manifest itself as a magenta cast on dark synthetic materials, especially in artificial light. ” -only dark synthetic materials only? And artificial lighting sources like incandescent and fluorescent, which I hope can be corrected with UV/IR or with photoshop, right?

The problem is securing local sources for the right filter sizes for a 35Lux and 90cron. The previous owner of the M8.2 threw in with the sale a set of filters for his 35mm Voigtlander f/2.8 is pretty useless to me. Now that answers my question what they were for.

What brand quality of filter would you suggest that would be reasonable? leica prices are very expensive. My current Leica lenses have the standard UVa. The journey continues!

Correcting in Photoshop isn't an ideal solution. With the M8 and M8.2 I would say that UV/IR filters are a requirement. UVa filters will have no benefit. People have had mixed results using the B+W 486 IR filters. The Leica filters were designed specifically to fix the issue. You'll need an E46 and E55 for the two lenses you mentioned.

    Where are you located?

Nice to see the S2 is working out well for your paid jobs in addition to the ones just for fun!

Manilaman2001;2453 wrote: Has the magenta hue prevalent in the M8 still present in the M8.2, or has that been corrected? I just got myself a pre-loved M8.2 and have been told by the former owner it still had that magenta hue on dark images, specially prevalent on evening shoots. I have not noticed it on my unit, but saw it on a friend's m8.2.

Then recently someone told me its been correct. Would anyone link me to reference material on this please.

The M8 and the M8.2 both have the same sensor and are both sensitive to the near-IR spectrum. This can manifest itself as a magenta cast on dark synthetic materials, especially in artificial light. Of course, the effect is eliminated with the use of the Leica UV/IR filters on your lenses.

But might be difficult to see that in real life, because S2 is running very long with 2 batteries…. 😀

    I stand corrected. 😮

    Thanks for the clarification, Stephan.

Nevertheless, I have two other wishes for an eventual firmware-update:

    1) Since the last firmware update, it appears that the lens goes back in the last position after shutting down the camera. What may look as a good idea first, brings some problems for me: I have manually to screw down the focus to put the lens cap on (with the 120 mm), and when I switch on the camera, the lens cap is blown away.

Because of this behavior of the 120mm, I'd suggest using a 72mm front cap, not an 82mm. Problem solved.

    2) Zhis has nothing to do with the firmware-update, but I think the camera uses the camera-battery first (or more) when using the grip. This means that you have to remove the grip and the battery when charging battery. It would be usefull to use the battery in the grip first, as it is much more simple to change the batteery from the grip than from the body

With the grip attached, the battery in the grip is drained first, not the other way around. This way, you can just change out the grip battery without having the remove the entire grip itself.

Craig is a great guy and a wonderful photographer. I first met him in 2008 when he was the keynote presenter at the LHSA Annual Meeting in Seattle. More recently, I had the pleasure of attending a Leica Akademie M9 workshop in South Beach which he instructed.

I was just reading the article earlier this morning at TOP.

BTW, I like the shot with the reflection of the windows in the puddle of water.

With the arrival of the MM I am very tempted. And yet I wonder if for my scenario it's not better to buy an M6 and shoot film for B&W and wait for an M10 for my deep desire of a camera that performs better in low light.

Do you have a point of view on this? I'm going to be visiting the US next week and if I'm going to go with film, I could look for a used camera. Thanks.

If you want to work only in B&W, then I can't think of a better camera than the M Monochrom. It's quality and flexibility is way beyond that of film.

    Georg,

I'm a little late to the party (I'm 6 hours behind here in the US), but I would have said it was the battery not holding a charge.

When you see the CF card light turn red for a moment, go off, then nothing else works… 99% of the time it indicates a dead battery. Over the last couple years with the S2, we've seen this a handful of times. Leica has been good about replacing defective batteries, but I would second the opinion that a second battery is always a good idea in spite of the S2's phenomenal battery life.

When you put the dead battery on the charger and tried again, it was just further evidence of a battery gone bad. It is a little easier to diagnose with the Pro Charger as the charger will display the actual existing charge on the battery.

Anyway, glad that everything is sorted out so quickly.
