• Hi, my nearest S dealer is many hundreds of miles away and there is no local exposure /knowledge on S at all (only 4 million people in my state and I think just 2 or 3 actual dealers in a country of 22 million people). It's hard enough with the M system which I am now using.
Can anyone provide or point me to detail on the changes to the AF…[Read more]

  • Today, Leica has informed us that the new Leica APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH, announced on May 10, has been delayed due to the “extraordinary technical requirements” of this unique lens. Since its announcement, the APO-Summicron-M 50mm f/2 ASPH has been highly anticipated and when it does finally ship, sometime in 2013, it will deliver the finest optical quality that users have ever seen from a 50mm Leica M lens.

David was fortunate enough to be able to use a prototype of this lens in Berlin while testing out the Leica M Monochrom (which was announced at the same time). To see some images that show what this lens can do, check out his Leica M Monochrom review. The lens' performance shines through when using the Monochrom, given the extremely high demands of that camera's unique sensor and lack of interpolation.

As of now, we don't know specifically when the lens will ship, or how long the delay will be. When we learn more specific information, it will be shared here on Red Dot Forum. Feel free to Email or call us anytime at 1-800-327-1776 with questions.

    Thanks David.

Just wonder why the Holidays (i.e., Christmas–sorry but that's what it is) would delay it to January? The date of the Christmas was know when the anouncment was…[Read more]

  • Thanks mark for the info … Ill keep and eye on that .

  • Thanks guys! I admit to being on a crusade regarding working with lights and the S2. Or, I should say, explore the possibilities with a tool that is more than qualified.

While is certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea, it can expand usage of this wonderful tool and open up the creative possibilities more fully.

The trick is using just…[Read more]

  • Marc, thank you so much for the detailed explanations. Very helpful.

  • For what it's worth, Leica has new version of its shuttle software for shooting tethered which should be released soon. I saw it in action at the Leica studio event at PhotoPlus about a month ago. I don't know when it will be available for S2 owners to download and I don't know if it offers any performance improvement over the current version.…[Read more]

  • Marc,
Great instructional posts with fantastic examples! You really show what is possible with the small strobes that most users buy and what can be done with the pro level strobes.

  • Below is how I most frequently use an off-camera KEY light, and a speed-light for fill:

The SF58 can be used directly in the hot-shoe and kept in HSS-TTL mode if you connect a radio sender via a sync cord to the S2's PC outlet on the side of the camera.

To accommodate this I place the S2 on a Kirk grip that has a 1/4″ tread on top of…[Read more]

It takes about five minutes to get the M9 sensor perfectly clean. First I vacuum it with the Green clean vacuum cleaner, then I swipe it (if needed) with the wet and dry swabs by Green Clean. For the odd oily drop (very rare) I use Smear Away by visible Dust.
Spotless – and I check it under a surgical operating microscope.

It seems many Monochrome users have a need to write down their impressions. I put a little article in Theme Magazine, despite being on the learning curve with this superb tool.

  • I'm back!

Okay, here is a demo of using the Phottix Stratos-II Nikon Transmitter in the S2 hot-shoe with a SF-58 set to A then mounted on top of the Stratos-II. Plus another SF-58 off-camera set to A mounted on a Stratos-II Nikon Receiver that's in the SF-58 supplied stand-foot.

Top image shows the on-camera SF-58 shut off to evaluate…[Read more]

  • If I may offer a few suggestions:

Forget about using the SF58 in slave mode. It is an inferred trigger and quite unreliable like most line-of-sight flash trigger systems (which is why Canon has finally brought out a self-contained radio based speed-light system).

Not to mention what a huge trial-and-error PITA it is to balance out…[Read more]

If I see some (limited) use using longer R-lenses on the M, I really doubt if this makes a sense for wide angle and zooms (again, the longer zooms may be an option).

  • I agree Stuart. Leica has always handled my few equipment issues very fairly. I can honestly say, I will continue to be a Leica customer largely because the manner in which they have resolved issues and treated me over the years. • Well, I finally got a response on my lens (my local dealer works via a distributor in another country, so it took much longer than normal to get this organized…I will be sending it direct from now on), and Leica said that there was something wrong with it, and they were replacing it. So we'll see. I will get the replacement by Wednesday, I hope.…[Read more]

This is correct. The SF 58 won't fire in TTL on the S2, only TTL-HSS.
