Today, Leica has just released the Vario-Elmarit-SL 28–70mm f/2.8 ASPH, a compact, constant-aperture zoom designed to offer a lighter, more accessible option in the SL lens lineup. With a versatile 28–70mm focal range and fast f/2.8 aperture throughout, this new lens looks to be perfect for travel, everyday carry and video work.
Weighing just 572g (20oz) and measuring only 102mm (4 inches) in length, the 28–70 is now the most compact and lightweight SL zoom available. Despite the smaller footprint, Leica hasn't cut corners. The lens features all-metal construction, full weather and dust sealing, and an AquaDura® hydrophobic coating on external elements.
Designed for Versatility
By shortening the zoom range by just 4mm, Leica was able to make the 28-70 noticably smaller and lighter than either the hefty 24-90 or even the already streamlined 24-70. Thankfully, speed doesn’t come at the expense of size since the lens maintains a constant f/2.8 aperture across the entire zoom range.

Fast, quiet autofocus makes it equally well-suited for stills and video work, and the 67mm filter thread means cross-compatibility with the full range of APO-Summicron-SL primes. For comparison, the other SL zooms use the larger E82 filter size.

Internally, the lens features 16 elements in 12 groups, including three double-sided aspherical elements and a multi-lens focusing group. Combined with Leica’s advanced lens coatings, the result is excellent contrast, color fidelity, and overall image sharpness across the frame.

Where Does the 28–70 Fit In?
With the arrival of the 28–70mm f/2.8, Leica’s SL-System lens lineup now includes three midrange zoom options, each with its own strengths. While there’s certainly overlap, the 28–70 doesn’t replace the existing 24–70 or 24–90. Rather, it adds a new, more compact alternative.
Since the SL-System debuted nearly ten years ago, users have consistently asked for smaller and lighter lenses. Leica responded first with the APO-Summicron-SL primes, followed by the 24–70 zoom, and more recently, the non-APO Summicron-SL 35mm and 50mm lenses. The new 28–70 continues this trajectory, an effort to make the SL more approachable without compromising the Leica experience.
For current SL owners, especially those already using a 24–70 or 24–90, the new lens could serve as a lightweight companion for travel or everyday use. At nearly 300 grams lighter than the 24–70 and a full 570 grams lighter than the 24–90, the difference isn’t subtle, and can go a long way in minimizing the inherent bulk of a full SL kit.

For new buyers, it comes down to priorities. The 24–90 offers the broadest zoom range, from true wide angle to short telephoto, includes optical image stabilization, and delivers the highest image quality, but it’s also the largest and most expensive. The 24–70 splits the difference, offering a constant f/2.8 aperture with excellent optical performance in a slightly smaller, more affordable package. And if you’re willing to trade 24mm for 28mm in exchange for even less bulk and a lower price point, the 28–70 could be an excellent foundation for an SL kit.

Bundle Deal wtih SL3-S
For those looking to jump into the SL-System for the first time, upgrade their current setup or add a backup body, Leica is also offering the new Vario-Elmarit-SL 28–70mm f/2.8 ASPH as part of a bundle with the latest SL3-S body. Priced at $6,495, the Leica SL3-S Vario Kit represents a savings of $1,060 compared to purchasing the items separately, making it a compelling option for anyone building a lightweight, high-performance full-frame mirrorless kit.

MTF Charts
Looking at the MTF charts at 28mm, 40mm, and 70mm, the Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 28–70mm f/2.8 ASPH delivers solid optical performance, especially considering its compact size and weight. Wide open at f/2.8, the lens maintains strong contrast and resolution across much of the frame, with performance peaking around 40mm. Sagittal and tangential lines track closely, particularly at center, indicating minimal astigmatism and good correction of aberrations.
As expected, there’s some falloff toward the edges, more noticeable at the long end of the zoom range. But overall sharpness remains respectable, and the transition is smooth, not abrupt, preserving natural rendering. Stopping down to f/5.6 and f/8 brings improved corner performance across all focal lengths, with the curves tightening up nicely. While the 28–70mm isn’t trying to match the reference-level APO lenses in the SL lineup, it still holds its own.

Pricing, Ordering and Availability
Initial deliveries of the new Vario-Elmarit-SL 28-70mm f/2.8 ASPH lens will start shipping soon for a price of $1,890. As with any Leica lens launch, supply might be limited to start. Sample Images
Leica provided some really nice sample images, shot on SL3 and SL3-S for a variety of subjects. As always, be sure to click on the image for a larer view. The images certainly have that distinctive character that we've come to expect for SL glass. Sharp details, great color, no noticeable distortion or abberations. The bokeh at the long end wide-open looks is pleasing for portraits, and I'm extremely impressed with the resistance to flare shooting right into the sun.
