Leica ZM11 Automatic Watches in Steel and Titanium with Dual Layer Dials and Quick-Change Bands

Only a couple months after releasing their in-house ZM1 and ZM2 flagship timepieces, Leica has just expanded their watch offerings with three new ZM11 models. Featuring automatic movements, dual-layered colored dials and a unique Leica Easy Change Band Locking System, the 41mm ZM11 watches look absolutely stunning. Available in three base metal and dial color combinations, along with three different bracelet and strap options for each one, we've had a hard time picking which one looks best.

All three models showcase the same dual-layer dial motif under a domed sapphire crystal, with horizontal cutouts providing a design element and depth to the watch face. Complications are kept to the essentials here with just hours, minutes, sweeping seconds hand, and date window at three o'clock, controlled with a standard single screw-down crown. Super Luminova infilled stick indices along with hashed markings on the rehaut make for easy reading and a clean look. All watches are rated to 10ATM, which equates to 100m or 330ft, perfect for swimming, snorkeling or lounging in the hot tub after a long day of photography.

Three Watch Head Options

Initially, there will be three watch heads available. The stainless steel model features a dual-layered sunburst Midnight Blue dial with brushed case, while the two aviation Grade 5 titanium case options sport a subtle textured finish and either a Coffee Black dial with warm-toned hands and indices or the special Launch Edition featuring a two-tone black/red dial with silver hands and indices. The Launch Edition will be limited to just 250 pieces worldwide, and showcases a two-tone dial that changes from black to red when viewed at different angles.

The Movement

Departing from the ‘Made in Germany' limited production ethos of the ZM1 and ZM2, Leica opted for a customized Swiss-made movement developed in collaboration with Chronode SA to make the ZM11 a bit more of a mainstream option with higher production numbers. Instead of the hand-wound calibers found in the earlier releases, the ZM11 is powered by the Leica Calibre LA-3001 self-winding movement. Beating at 28,800bph, the new movement has a generous 60-hour power reserve and an impressive accuracy of -4/+6 seconds per day, measured in five positions, which is in line with COSC standards.

Viewed through the edge-to-edge sapphire glass display back, the movement is downright gorgeous and right in-line with Leica's design aesthetic, with sandblasted surfaces, brushed chamfers and striking dark grey galvanic Ruthenium plating on the bridges and rotor. It's understated yet impressive all at the same time, with a mix of dark tones and polished surfaces.

Easy Change System

The ZM 11’s innovative Easy-Change locking system allows effortless switching between different strap options, including stainless steel, titanium, rubber, and fabric. The mechanism is integrated into the lugs section of the case, with the bands holding simple counter-pieces that interlock, ensuring a safe connection. To release the strap, simply press the red dot on the underside, mirroring the lens release button found on Leica M cameras. This intuitive design adds a sense of familiarity and elegance to the strap-changing process and was created specifically for the ZM 11 collection.

Pricing

Pricing depends on the watch model and band. Here's how the options break down. The watch head must be purchased together with a strap or bracelet. The paired strap options for each will come with a matching stainless or titanium buckle, depending on the model.

Additional straps and bracelets will also be available a la carte, to allow for quick change of look. Pricing is straightforward, and while stainless and titanium options can be mixed and matched, Leica's recommendation is to stick with titanium for titanium and steel for steel.
