I started with the 35mm only. I got the 120mm from David Farkas when it became available. That's all I have and the camera is used for everything. I recommend asking David for a loaner/renter of a 120mm for you to answer the questions you are asking, but don't examine it unless you have the cash to buy it as you will love it.

Our second interesting storm of the year. The day before was in the 50s and then dropped 30 overnight while raining. With a wind, the snow sticks to the side of trees.

It was literally cool, but your winter shots inspired me to get outside.
Glad you find the new S higher ISO useful.

In winter, you can always create other seasons by getting closer to your subject.

This process started with a 120mm shot of a Wisconsin lighthouse on Lake Michigan in winter.
Then I went back on another day just get closer to the lighthouse, to create an industrial abstract. A much colder day I might add.

There are some key differences between the S-120mm and 180mm lenses. The 120mm is an f/2.5 lens and the 180mm is f/3.5. The 120mm is also a macro that focuses down to about 20 inches.

I'd also suggest using a card reader to download your images, rather than the camera. The USB connection on the camera is really only meant to use for tethered shooting to a computer. In the case of tethering, the data mode is set to External and the camera won't go to sleep.
