Today, Leica has announced the return of a beloved classic accessory for analog M cameras. Designed for fast and discreet shooting, the Leicavit M allows photographers to quickly advance film and cock the shutter with a single smooth motion, without ever lowering the camera from the eye.

While the most recent iteration of the Leicavit M was discontinued back in 2020, Leica is bringing the popular rapid winder back in three finish options. Available in Black Paint, Silver Chrome, and Glossy Black Paint, the new Leicavits will match any current and most past Leica M camera bodies. These are now regular production accessories, not limited edition. So, while initial supply might be somewhat limited relative to demand, Leica will continue to produce all three finished going forward.

The Leicavit Story
The Leicavit was first introduced in 1957 alongside the original Leica MP. Designed as a compact trigger-style winder, it allowed photographers to advance the film and re-cock the shutter in one motion, without lowering the camera from the eye. The accessory quickly gained favor among photojournalists and street photographers for its speed and unobtrusiveness.

Production of the original Leicavit ended in 1966, leaving it to become a prized collector’s item for decades. Leica revived the concept in 2003 with an updated Leicavit M, tailored for the modern MP and later compatible with other M film cameras. That version remained in production until December 2020, when it was again discontinued.
Now, in 2025, the Leicavit makes its return. This reintroduction ensures that film M shooters once again have access to one of Leica’s most iconic and practical accessories. Crafted in brass and finished to Leica standards, the Leicavit carries the legacy forward.

Fast, Fluid Shooting
The Leicavit M enables film transport at up to two frames per second, making it ideal for dynamic situations. Mounting is simple – just replace the standard baseplate with the Leicavit M. Operation is equally as intuitive – unfold the lever, pull laterally to the stop, let it spring back, and release the shutter. When you're not shooting, fold the lever back into bottom of the Leicavit. Thanks to its virtually wear-free rod guide and toothed belt mechanism, the winder delivers smooth, consistent performance. And you can still use the camera's built-in shutter advance lever interchangeably with the Leicavit mounted.

Compatibility
The Leicavit M works with a wide range of Leica film bodies. No modification is necessary. Just replace the camera's baseplate with the Leicavit.
